Our Press Release from February 19th has been well received. We have featured in several online publications to date including BBC News Online, Spaceflight, Register, Flightglobal and Space Fellowship, amongst others. Watch this space!

February has seen a series of new firings of the STERN (Static Test Expansion deflection Rocket Nozzle) engine in an extension test programme. We explored base bleeding through a porous sintered metal plug. There were four hot firings in this extension programme, which has made a total of twenty hot firings of the STERN altogether. This was twice as many as originally planned. The STERN results are now feeding through to the STRICT (Static Test Rocket Incorporating Cooled Thrust-chamber) rocket which is due to begin firing in the summer of 2010.

More information can be found on the Stern Project site: www.projectstern.co.uk

Testing of the Viper engine has resumed during the past month. A batch of prototype tubes for the Viper engine have also arrived. These tubes have been measured and pressure-tested to check conformity.

ESA Award to Reaction Engines Ltd

The SKYLON spaceplane is one step closer to realization thanks to European Space Agency and UK Government support for revolutionary British propulsion technology.

A reusable spaceplane that can take off from a conventional aircraft runway, carry over twelve tonnes to orbit and then return to land on the same runway could be less than a decade away thanks to a one million euro award by the European Space Agency (ESA).
