Completion of Altitude Compensating Nozzle Testing
Project STRICT, an Altitude Compensating Nozzle project led by the University of Bristol with industry support from Reaction Engines Ltd and Airborne Engineering Ltd, has successfully completed its test firing programme. As part of the Technology Demonstration Programme, Project STRICT investigated potential technologies of the SABRE engine for the SKYLON spaceplane.
As a follow on to Project STERN which saw the first test of an Expansion/Deflection (ED) nozzle in the UK, Project STRICT investigated the nozzle performance of two ED nozzle contour designs, HN1 and HN2. The contour designs were derived using data gathered from the initial Project STERN, and a series of cold flow nozzle tests at the University of Bristol’s MEGG (Medium Enthalpy Gas Generator) Facility.
The tests were conducted by Airborne Engineering Ltd at Westcott Venture Park, a revived site using infrastructure originally used by the British Rocket Propulsion Establishment (RPE).
Project STRICT was jointly funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Reaction Engines. |
