Apprenticeships and Graduate scheme

We’re training the next generation of rocket scientists.

We’re in the middle of a long-term development programme, and we know that we’ll need skill sets which are hard to find. Our apprenticeship scheme takes outstanding young people and trains them in both academic and real work environments to turn them into our next generation of designers, technicians and engineers. We’re already seeing positive results – read on to see how you could be part of the future of powered flight.

Our Scheme

Reaction Engines run a level 3 advanced apprentice scheme to ensure our apprentices come out at the cutting edge of engineering and science disciplines. A select number of young people are taken on every year, and get to work in a professional aerospace environment while they study to become trained and qualified technicians.

Where do I apply?

We open applications for our next intake on the apprenticeship programme in November 2017 for a September 2018 start. Check back regularly for further details and follow us on social media for updates.

We're already getting results

Our first apprenticeship intake is bearing fruit - we've already got our first three apprentices trained and qualified, and we're helping them study for degrees while they work on our SABRE development. The outstanding work which they do in-house is feeding into both our programme and into their education.

Hear from a qualified Apprentice

Matthew Evans started his Apprenticeship 5 years ago on a level 3 Mechanical and Electrical scheme. He now works for Reaction Engines as a qualified technician and tells us his story below.

I heard about my apprenticeship from my Dad who works for UKAEA and encouraged me to apply for an apprenticeship here at REL in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
I’m glad I did, it has been an exciting experience.

Before I began my apprenticeship I was hoping to get into University. I was looking to study Maths and Physics at Bachelor level and up, however after reading into what the apprenticeship could offer me and how inspired I was by Reaction Engines and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, how could I pass that opportunity up?!

Now I am a qualified technician and I’m studying electrical and electronic engineering BEng. I’m looking forward to completing my Bachelor’s degree and working toward chartership in the future.

I enjoy how the creative and technical thinking that I’ve learnt over the course of my apprenticeship and various academic qualifications enables me to work better within my team.

Before my apprenticeship I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level and got some good grades. Since starting the Apprenticeship I have completed a BTEC in Engineering and a HNC in Electronic Engineering. These were completed part-time alongside work. At work I completed a NVQ Level 3 during this time period. I achieved great grades in these courses too. This combined with my A-Levels demonstrated my ability to be able to move onto University level higher learning.

Before starting my apprenticeship I’m not sure I could believe what a new class of rocket engine could be doing for humanity. Now, five years on from then, I do and it’s still hard to believe. I’m very proud of being able to engage with the general public at various outreach events about Reaction Engines at space conferences and the Farnborough Airshow over the years.

Interview with first year Apprentices

We interviewed Thomas Hawthorn and Callum Tinson, both in their first year.

Q: How did you hear about the Apprenticeship scheme at Reaction Engines?

Thomas Hawthorne: I was researching different companies for an apprenticeship, I visited a few websites and found Reaction Engines, then applied directly.

Callum Tinson: After I had finished my A-Levels, I decided to look for an apprenticeship. After many interviews/assessment days with various companies I found Reaction Engines through The Engineering Trust.

Q : What do you like about working at Reaction Engines?

A: In the company there is a very happy, friendly working environment and it is a pleasure to be part of the team. Every day there is something new and exciting. We can’t wait to start using what we’ve learnt within the company.

Q: What courses have you studied?

Within Oxford Advanced Skills (OAS) we have learnt how to competently use mechanical machines such as lathes/mills as well as other mechanical equipment. As well as some electrical work. How to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) in Solidworks and we have transferred these skills over to 3D printing. We are currently covering engineering mathematics and started using Arduinos to learn the basics of programming. Most recently we have started doing some mechanical maintenance.

We have also learnt some electro pneumatic instrumentation which we were not expecting to learn about.

Q: Name some key highlights so far:

On the second day of starting at Reaction Engines Ltd, we visited Westcott Venture Park where we watched the firing of a test nozzle. As well as having the pleasure to meet Tim Peake!

Q; What are you looking forward to the most?

Becoming a fully qualified engineer and working with the company.
